Material Safety Data Sheets
A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), now known as a Safety Data Sheet (SDS), is a document that lists information about the potential hazards and safe use and transportation of a product. SDSs are primarily intended for quick identification for occupational settings, but some information may also be relevant to consumers.
SDSs can include information such as:
- Physical and chemical characteristics: Flammability, explosive properties, color, melting point, and flash point
- Health effects: How the substance can affect human health
- Reactivity: What chemicals the substance can react with adversely
- Handling precautions: How to safely use the substance
- Emergency procedures: First aid and spill-handling procedures
- Personal protection: What protective equipment to wear
